Library Catalogue - Tips and Tricks

  

You will be searching the catalogue of all TAFE NSW libraries, but the items available at your selected library will be easy to find as they are marked with a red tick.    To narrow your search, select to search HERE from the list of libaries.

Check out the library catalogue user guide or ask library staff for help.

  

Advanced Search - allows searching using Boolean operators, and lets you limit the search by: library, location on the shelves, item format (e.g. DVD) and publication year.

  

Browse Search - allows you to browse a keyword by author, title, subject, series or periodical title. Similar keywords are included in the display list.

  

Find It Fast - contains pre-defined searches for items with specific formats (e.g. DVD, eBooks) and/or specific information (e.g. Australian Literature, English as a Second Language).

  

The Temp List allows you to create a temporary bibliography of items - click in the Temp List box next to each item. If you login to My Account first, you can save the Temp List for future access.

  

My Account - Your user account allows you to: see the items you currently have out, view the status of any holds you have placed, see any fines or other blocks on your library account, or renew any items that are not overdue or have not been renewed more than twice.
Note: You will need your TAFEcard barcode number and a password (PIN). To set up your PIN, please ask at your your local campus library.


Looking for eResources?

eBooks, eJournals, eVideos, encyclopedias, Standards Australia and TAFE Exam Papers are all available on the eResources guide.  Your TAFE username and password is required - ask your library staff.

Borrowing - Frequently Asked Questions

  

TAFE NSW students - new or continuing TAFE NSW students can borrow in person from any library within TAFE NSW using your TAFEcard. Students - conditions of use.

TAFE NSW staff - can borrow in person from any library within TAFE NSW using your TAFEcard. Note: you may need to show proof of current TAFE NSW employment. Staff - conditions of use

Note: Current TAFE students and staff can join the University of Wollongong Library as guests (category 14) There is no charge. More information

Members of the public - can join your local TAFE Illawarra library as an Associate Borrower. Conditions and fees apply.

University of Wollongong students and staff - can join your local TAFE library as an Associate Borrower. Conditions and fees apply. Note: Fees do not apply to UOW borrowers at Moss Vale TAFE Library.

TAFE National Reciprocal Borrowing Scheme - students and staff of participating TAFE libraries may register and borrow materials in person from any other participating host TAFE library in any other state. Conditions apply.

  

Students can borrow up to 15 items at any one time. (Some libraries have limits on some formats). 
Staff can borrow any number of items.

  • Books & magazines:           2 weeks (students); 4 weeks (staff)
  • DVDs and CDs:                  1 to 2 weeks
  • Closed reserve:                   In-library only or short term loans
  • Equipment and laptops:      Various loan periods

  

Yes - You can renew a loan up to 2 times on or before the due date, as long as no one else has the item on reserve. You can renew your loans: in person, by phone, by email - see library phone numbers and email addresses above. Renew your loans guide.

You can return your items to the library, via the internal or external return chutes, any time the Campus is open.

Please return your borrowed items to the library before the due date, otherwise penalties and fines may apply. Be sure to return them to the library you borrowed from.

If you lose or damage any items, you will be required to replace or pay for them. Please refer to the Library Conditions of Use for more details.

  

Yes - If you have loans that are overdue, your borrowing privileges will be suspended until they have been returned.

As a student, you will receive a penalty of $10 per item for any loans that are overdue by more than 23 days. You will not receive your TAFE results or testamur (e.g. Certificate or Diploma) if you have not returned all items AND paid all outstanding library fees. Please refer to the Library Conditions of Use and the Student Discipline (Library Resource Materials) Policy.

If you are an Associate or Reciprocal borrower, a penalty of $10 per item will apply to any item that is overdue by more than 23 days.

  

Yes - If there is an item you would like to borrow which is already on loan, you can reserve it. Once the item becomes available you will be contacted. This is a free service.

You can reserve an item:  in person, by phone, by email or online via the Library Catalogue.

Online reservations - You will need to use your TAFEcard barcode number and a password (PIN). To set up your PIN, please ask at your your local campus library. For full instructions, please ask your library staff to demonstrate, and read the Placing a Hold guide for more information.  Notes:

  • You can only reserve items that belong to your home library
  • You can only reserve an item that is out (to someone else).
  • You may be placed in a queue if more than one person has reserved that item.

  

Yes - You can borrow in person from any other TAFE library in NSW. Just present your TAFEcard.

If you cannot visit in person, you can ask for an interlibrary loan - see below.

  

  • If there is an item you would like to borrow from another TAFE NSW library, you can ask your library staff to request it for you.
  • Students: Items requested must be related to your TAFE course, with a limit of two interlibrary loans at any one time.
  • Staff: Items requested must be related to your TAFE work or teaching area, with a limit of four interlibrary loans at any one time.
  • The interlibrary loan service is available only to TAFE NSW students and staff and is free to use.
  • Please contact your library staff for more information.

  

Yes - You can join any TAFE Illawarra library as an Associate Borrower - please see the Associate Borrowers policy. Note: fees apply.

  

Yes - You can join your local public library for free and enjoy the many services they offer, including weekend opening hours.

You can also access the University of Wollongong Library as a guest borrower or alumni member.

Do a search for your favourite topic in the library catalogue and then click on the RSS feed button above the search results list. You will receive updates to your feed every time there is a new item added on that topic.

Or, look for the New Items button in the Library Info box on the library catalogue home page for your library. Ask your library staff for more information.

  

Click on the title link in the new resource list to see the catalogue entry. Then use the button. which displays on the right hand side of the item's record.
